Swallows

Yesterday I had to take my car to the garage to be serviced, a normal enough activity made splendid by watching the swallows dash in and out of the open garage doors. The birds usually nest in the rafters above our heads and are quite used to people coming, going and working below them. The garage keeps its maintenance bay doors open all year round especially for the swallows, that in a good season can nurture three clutches of eggs.

So while the man was talking to me about engines I was watching swallows which is just as well because all talk about engines, cars etc might as well be in Dutch as far as I am concerned. But it did remind me of an illustration I have just completed for the new Joanne Harris book “A Pocketful of Crows”.

Hope you like it the book is out on October 16th!
